We all Make a Difference

This past week I received a very special award from the Rotary Foundation part of Rotary International, the Paul Harris Fellowship Award "in appreciation of tangible and significant assistance given for the furtherance of better understanding and friendly relations among peoples of the world." Paul Harris founded the Rotary Club and at his death in 1948 this fellowship was set up and given in recognition to individuals, who by their example and contribution to the community, exemplify the ideals of Rotary: "Service above Self." Each Rotary Club in our area gives two awards and I was the proud recipient of the award from the Fredericton North Rotary. The other five awards given were to wonderful dedicated volunteers who have given much of themselves to make a difference locally and globally. 003

For the last fifteen years I have volunteered with the Rotary and Hospital Foundation to create a week long magical holiday event in support of hospital and Rotary programs. The event took half a year to plan and many volunteers. I have had the best job in bringing the theme to life with my talents and turn the Forestry Complex into a Winter Wonderland! When I first was asked after showing up to help out to take over the Decorating Chair I was unsure. I had volunteered in many other ways over the years but as a newly single mother with a baby and nine year old didn't know if I was up for the job. I said yes anyway. Now the baby is almost seventeen and "Chief Elf" at the event, the nine year old, now twenty five became stage manager several years ago. It has been a family affair and one filled with many memorable moments. I have been honored to work with countless volunteers from the Rotary and Hospital Foundation and the great staff at the Forestry Complex. 001

We all make a difference, we all volunteer our time and touch others in many ways. My parents, my Dad always volunteered, lent a helping hand whenever it was needed. My Mom, a teacher always was gathering extra mittens, clothing for some of her students even when we did not have much, we always shared. The most valuable gift of all is setting an example for those who come after us. "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that has." Margaret Mead. To making a difference---Debra
